Zakynthos:- Citizens BE AWARE… fraud attempts by phone

The General Regional Police Directorate of the Ionian Islands announces that, in the last twenty-four hours, the Service of the Police Directorate of Corfu received a complaint of defrauding a citizen, in which astute persons succeeded and obtained a sum of money.

In particular, on the alert, he called the unsuspecting citizen, pretending to be a police officer and falsely claiming that a close relative of his had been involved in a fatal traffic accident, and asked for a sum of money so that the criminal proceedings would not be initiated against him. The citizen was convinced and subsequently handed over the amount at a place and time predetermined by the perpetrators.

With the aim of preventing and avoiding incidents of fraud by astute people, the General Regional Police Directorate of the Ionian Islands advises:

  • be especially wary when strangers call you and try to convince you to give them money, under the pretext that your relative has caused a car accident,
  • in these cases, always try to contact your relative by phone yourself, to confirm what they are referring to,
  • the communication should be made with your own phone and on your own initiative and you should not accept to speak with a person called by strangers,
  • for the same reasons not to give in to invitations to meet (dates, etc.);
  • in any case, to state that you are not going to give money,
  • inform your loved ones (of the close and wider family, friendly and social environment) and especially the elderly and advise them so that they are not deceived by astute people,
  • try to retain the characteristics of the perpetrators, if they come into contact with you, as well as the vehicles in which they drive (registration number, vehicle make, colour, etc.), to help the work of the prosecuting authorities,
  • always have available the telephone numbers you need to contact in case of emergency (Police, Fire Brigade, Hospitals, close relatives, etc.).

We call on citizens, institutions and social structures to inform the elderly to be especially cautious and in any case, even if attempted, to contact the Police immediately at the three-digit telephone number “100”.
