The big and seemingly intractable issue of stench, pollution, uncontrolled placement of waste in and out of waste bins, the fact that bins are not washed, as well as issues of cleanliness, cutting down trees and vegetation, cleaning (washing) public spaces throughout the Local Community of Zakynthos, was one of the issues that the local council of the Community of Zakynthos of the Municipality dealt with in its recent meeting.
The Deputy Head of the Cleaning Directorate of the Municipality of Zakynthos, Mr. Dionysios Turkakis, attended the Meeting, following his invitation.
The President of the council Konstantionos Pettas, introducing the 5th item of the agenda: “Protest about the stench, the pollution, the uncontrolled placement of waste inside and outside the waste bins, the fact that the bins are not washed, as well as cleanliness issues , cutting of trees and vegetation, cleaning (washing) of public spaces throughout the Local Community of Zakynthos”, presented the image of the Public spaces and squares within the boundaries of the Zakynthos Municipality which remains very ugly, while we are in the middle of summer, that the increased tourist traffic, further burdens the already burdened situation with volumes of garbage inside and outside the bins, bins that remain unwashed for a long time and are places of pollution and strong stench.
He suggested that more bins be placed at each point, since every day the bins are overflowing with garbage and are sources of contamination with risks to public health.
He also pointed out that there is negligence by some businessmen who do not take any measures and deposit their garbage in the bins unchecked and their remains are scattered on the streets and around the bins.
Cleaning of public spaces.
Regarding the cleaning of public spaces from native vegetation, he noted that the necessary cutting of trees and branches has not been carried out and it is considered imperative to wash the central squares of our City regularly, as they are a pole of attraction for the island’s residents and visitors every day and ” describe” the image of our Island to the outside world, a fact which has not been done effectively to date.
There is an absolute necessity for our Mayor and the competent Services to take the necessary actions to provide a solution to all the above problems, as they have degraded the image of our Island and make the daily life of residents and visitors difficult, said Mr. Pettas.
Tourkakis: The bin washing machine does not work because the Mayor considers it unprofitable to repair it.
Afterwards, the Deputy Head of the Cleaning Department, Mr. Dionysios Turkakis, took the floor, who, for the information of the House, stated the following:
Regarding the location of the bins, the Service has recorded forty-five (45) points within the City, which it will propose in order, after opinions of the competent bodies and the decision of the Board of Directors, to carry out the new location of the bins.
Indeed, there are phenomena of uncontrollable depositing of waste in the bins, as well as phenomena of placing garbage bags outside the bins even if they are empty. We observe all of this every day and are recorded by the supervisors of our Service, but in order for fines to be imposed, they must be located and the cleaning regulations of the Municipality must be updated.
To date, there is no functioning bin washing machine at our Service’s disposal. To this day, the washing machine remains in the workshop due to damage.
The Cleaning Service has carried out all the prescribed procedures for its repair, but our Mayor considers the cost of repair unprofitable and does not proceed with the required procedures. Therefore, it is not possible to wash the bins on a regular basis unless the existing bin washer is repaired or a new one is procured.
Regarding the lack of recycling bins, their supply did not proceed, as there was no money in the current budget of the Municipality.
Regarding the washing of the squares, the Municipality’s water carriers do not have the necessary power to wash effectively and an effort is being made to find the appropriate liquid, so that they can be properly cleaned.
Soon, after a proposal from our Service, the new cleanliness regulation will be launched, where the issues that exist will be settled and supervisors will be employed to check the waste disposal areas and in cases of violations will impose fines.
Then the President suggested that this decision be sent to the Mayor of Zakynthos, The Deputy Mayor of Financial and Administrative Services, The President of the Board of Directors and the Directorate of Cleanliness of the Municipality of Zakynthos, in order to express their strong protest about the stench, the pollution, the uncontrolled placing of waste inside and outside the waste bins, the fact that the bins are not washed, as well as issues of cleanliness, cutting trees and vegetation, cleaning (washing) public spaces throughout the Local Community of Zakynthos and in order to undertake immediately to the necessary actions.
