Everywhere you go in Greece you will see iconic blue and white Greek flags. They’re an important symbol to Greek the world over and come in many sizes. Did you know however that the world’s largest Greek flag can be found in Zakynthos?
Thanks to the Liveris family, the world’s largest Greek flag is located on the headland at Keri, who came up with the idea in 2006 when they put the flag up to help attract customers to their restaurant.
The flag flies from a 50-metre-high steel flagpole that was made in China, before being shipped to the island. The flag is approximately 7,000 square feet in size and weighs around 80 kilograms, it’s so large that an electric motor is used to haul it up the flagpole!
In May 2007 the Guinness Book of World Records confirmed it as the largest flag in the world. Sadly, that record has been beaten since, by several larger flags in Bolivia, Saudi Arabia, and the USA.
In 2021 several areas in Greece including Kardisa on mainland Greece and Santorini, intended to hoist large flags to commemorate the 200yr anniversary of the revolution. In Kardisa the flag was raised by a hot air balloon. In Santorini, their flag, which was the same size as the one at Keri was unable to be hoisted so it was spread out on the ground instead.
Officially Zakynthos still currently claims the official record for the largest Greek flag though, and it’s an incredible sight to see standing on the cliffs.
If you have any great images of the flag pole, share them with us on our social media, we’d love to see them!
