Zakynthos:- Jaws of Life “Penny” comes to the rescue, saving a 17 year old British Tourist.

A 17-year-old Briton miraculously had a lucky escape at Agios Sostis, Zakynthos, yesterday.  Initial thoughts were that he climbed a cliff and fell into the void whilst trying to take photographs of the area.  The young tourist ended up hanging from his leg which was nailed to an iron rod. Bathers notified the authorities and within minutes an ambulance and firefighters arrived at the scene, who freed the young and transported him to the hospital.

According to the first eyewitnesses and information released the 17-year-old climbed to take pictures, however, he himself said, when he was taken to the ambulance, that he tried to commit suicide.

A story that has hit hard among our Zakynthian community that such a young man could want to take his own life. In amongst the emotions, we also have felt a slight relief that our recent donation to the firemen of Zakynthos, helped in the time saving rescue. Yes, “Penny” the jaws of life was put to action. The donation of the eight thousand euro life saving tool was only handed over to the Fire Department three weeks ago. Message from Fire Chief of Zakynthos.

Here’s the message that was given to Maria Drogitis of the Ionian Echo from the Fire Chief of Zakythos.

Chief Spyros Pavlogeorgatos would like to once again extend his most heartfelt thanks to the Rotary Club, the Ionian Echo, the Zakynthos Informer and all those wonderful people who contributed to the island acquiring this life saving tool.

Although most of us wished that “Penny” would not be needed it is a relief to know that in a life threatening situation our rescue services are equipped with a tool that can help in saving those in need, quickly and safely and a relief of satisfaction is felt knowing that our volunteers were part of that rescue. Again the words GO VOLUNTEERS can only be repeated with pride.

Zakynthos Informer would like to wish the young boy a speedy recovery and we hope that Zakynthos will be his new beginning.
