Zakynthos:- Plea and actions from our local authourities concerning covid-19

A significant increase in cases is observed in recent days in our country and on the island with the authorities mobilizing in order to take measures to reduce cases.

EODY announced on Monday afternoon that the new cases of coronavirus in the country amount to a record high of 5449. In the last 24 hours, 52 of our fellow citizens lost their lives. Whilst 430 are intubated.

Zakynthos, yesterday, saw 15 new cases while over the last few weeks we haven’t seen our cases come down under a two digit number.

The Deputy Regional Governor of Zakynthos, Katerina Mothoneou, stressed that our fellow citizens must show the required attention and to observe the measures. “Unfortunately we are once again in the red.” “We have a very large increase in cases and I want there to be co-operation with our fellow citizens, in order to get out of this situation quickly.” After communication with EODY, random inspections will begin in Local Communities. “Wanting to help , I have contacted EODY, in order to start doing more tests in communities where we know that there is an increase in cases, so that we can avoid greater dispersion. At the same time, I want there to be cooperation with our fellow citizens, so that we can start being vaccinated. We are still at a very low rate of vaccination and it must be increased, to exceed 70%. “I want to ask our fellow citizens to get vaccinated, in order to create the wall of immunity that is necessary.”

Zakynthos MP Dionysis Aktypis also spoke about the need for immediate vaccination of the population, noting that it is the only way to protect ourselves. “The medical community has been vaccinated by 97% and we have exceeded 6.5 billion vaccine doses. We cannot say today that we are not vaccinated because we are afraid. We saw its effectiveness. So what some claim is that vaccines are not safe is not true, because 6.5 billion doses have already been used. In Zakynthos there has been no death from vaccine, but unfortunately we had deaths from coronavirus and at this time only from my village, two people are in critical condition. I urge the society to be vaccinated “.

Appeal of the Deputy Regional Governor to businesses.

The Deputy Regional Governor also spoke about the complaints made on our island about customers entering a store with fake certificates.

“I want to ask the businessmen of the island to follow the measures. There will be no restrictions on traffic or opening hours. But more help is needed in keeping the measures and distances. Use a mask and be informed that indoors they must be vaccinated or have been tested and followed by identification, because, unfortunately, we have complaints that there are people who enter the shops with certificates of others. Our role is neither to impose fines, nor to police, nor to close the shops. Our role is to mobilize our fellow citizens, to have close cooperation, so that we can get out of the “red” and return to normalcy “.

The P.E. demands strict measures at the ports of entrance.

Finally, Ms. Mothoneou requested in the meeting she had with the Harbour Master, where the goal is to increase the controls at the port. “I asked the Port Authority to increase the controls at the port of Zakynthos and in Kyllini, so that everyone has the required documents (vaccination, test, disease cert). I also asked the presidents of Local Communities to inform our fellow citizens to participate in the tests that will be done in the villages by EODY, in order to stop the greater spread of the coronavirus by those who do not know that they are sick, because many may be asymptomatic”. The local authorities note that the actions will continue in order for the local population to be adequately informed and to control the spread of the virus.
