Zakynthos:- sudden change in weather starting today.

A sudden change in the weather is expected in a few hours on our island as most have been notified through different means..

As Professor, Anastasios Kalimeris, of the Ionian University explains to our local newspaper HMERA. , this is the first significant weather change of autumn…

Specifically, he states:

“A significant change in the weather is expected throughout the country as on Monday 4/9 there will be a transfer of cold – for the season – air masses from north-eastern Europe to the Balkans and the Greek area. In addition to the significant drop in temperature (especially on Tuesday 5/9 its maximum values are expected to drop from the level of 30-33 ºC to 23-25 ºC.  The cold invasion will cause rain and severe storms in places.

On Monday morning the front will take place in Northern Greece, while by noon it will extend to the entire mainland country.

From the afternoon – evening of Monday, stormy rains are also expected to occur in western Greece as well as in the Ionian zone. In the area of Zakynthos – Kefalonia – Lefkada, the phenomena is expected to intensify from Monday night to Tuesday morning, especially over sea areas, while scattered rainfall may persist until Tuesday evening. During this period, the cumulative amount of rain in the above-mentioned area seems to be between 30-60 mm, but much higher amounts of rain are expected in Thessaly, Evia, and the eastern Peloponnese. In the maritime area of Zakynthos, the winds from N-NW on Monday, will turn early on Tuesday to strengthened (4-6 bf) E-SE, remaining like this for the next 24-hours. Strong wind gusts may occur during storm development intervals.

Also interesting is the fact that according to the current forecast data (of 2/9), after its arrival from the Greek peninsula, on Tuesday 5/9, the aforementioned cold invasion will lead to the development of a strong barometric low in the SE Ionian Sea. As this system is estimated to remain over the warm sea areas of the southern Ionian-Syrtis-Libyan area until about the end of the week (tending in some phases to acquire tropical storm characteristics), it is likely to continue to affect,  with scattered storms from time to time, areas of southern Greece and mainly Thessaly and eastern mainland. In this context, after Tuesday the system is expected to give the wider area of Zakynthos occasional clouds and scattered local rains mainly in the maritime areas, with moderate (4-5 bf) E-SE winds, and the temperature to return almost to normal for the season levels”.
