Zakynthos:- Theatre, Kolokotronis in Zakynthos a must to see!

Kolokotronis in Zakynthos

Theodoros Kolokotronis was born “in 1770, April 3, on the Easter Monday… in a mountain, under a tree, in the old Messinian, called Ramavouni.

He was 10 years old when his father was killed by the Turks, an event that marked his life. At the age of 17 he became the chief of Leontari and at the age of 20 he married the daughter of the local prostitute Aikaterini Karousou. In 1806, during the great persecution of the thieves by the conquerors, he managed to escape and take refuge in Zakynthos, where he enlisted in the English army and reached the rank of major. In 1818 he was initiated into the Friendly Society and at the beginning of 1821 he landed in Mani to take part in the upcoming Struggle.

History brought to life.

To honour of this event, the Ionio Theatre directed by Angelo Pyrioxos, working with others to present a story that not many would know. The life of Kolokotronis in Zakynthos and how he planned the first steps towards the Revolution of 1821. The story was based on a friend’s interpretation of Kolokotronis, who was beside him with every step he took.

The two stars of the theatrical event Theodoros Kampitsis and Andriana Lykouresi bring the story alive with such passion. It is great to see that the history of our Island is shown in this way. It certainly brings light of how Zakynthians played an important part of Greek history and shows the Zakynthian spirit and her hospitality.

Although, the play is in Greek, watching it one can understand the fight Kolokotronis gave to save his nation. The anguish and dedication is played excellently through the actor, Kampitisis.

The music and song gives an element of grief. The loss of life that was sacrificed for the cause. However, its through the beautiful voice of Andrianna Lykouresi, that will certainly captivate you. Taking you back to old times were the struggle for freedom cost dearly.

Overall, this play is truly a dedication not only to Zakynthos but to the whole of Greece. Congratulation to all involved. It certainly deserves an outstanding applause.
