Shipwreck road closed due to safety reasons.
Many have been asking why the view point of our famous beach “shipwreck” is closed. Although the roads are closed leading to the view point, the famous “Panagiotis” can still be seen by boat.
As most would know Greece has been hit by devastating forest fires. It is for this reason that our authorities have chosen to close the road towards the viewpoint. It must be noted that while Zakynthos is on HIGH FIRE alert the roads will continue to be CLOSED. That includes any forest road on the island. It is also prohibited to circulate within the forest areas. Therefore our Fire Department and local volunteer teams are patrolling areas on a twenty-four hour basis.
When designing roads, the fire safety requirements of the area must be taken into account. Safe access presupposes roads and road networks without dead ends, of sufficient width, so as to allow the movement of firefighting vehicles in a two-way direction in case of emergency, but also the safe evacuation of those in the area. Unfortunately, our forest road to the shipwreck view point does not offer these such safety options. Our authorities basically have no choice but to close the area purely based on safety reasons.
Zakynthos Informer daily posts a “FIRE ALERT” map, so that visitors to our Island can be informed and be kept up to date as to when our forests will be open to the public once again.
