Zakynthos:- Wind turbines arrive on our Island, causing concern to residents across the Island.

The first wind turbines arrived on the island, residents’ concern in regards to a new environmental disaster.

The Zakynthian society feels troubled, anxious and unable to react regarding the installation of wind turbines on Mount Vrachionas in the Liva area, very close to the landfill on the island of Zakynthos. Last Saturday night (December 4), a ferry ship arrived on the island, carrying trucks loaded with wind turbine components that will be installed in the area where a wind turbine area will be created.

For the time being, however, and until the landscape is cleared up, our local authorities, with few exceptions, avoid informing the inhabitants of the island, about something that has been officially decided it seems a long time ago. While there are many who wonder if,  as there was on such islands of Corfu and Lefkada,  a reaction from the local authorities, as a result of which a similar project did not proceed.

In the video we see comments in particular about the negative impact this type of infrastructure will cause not only to the aesthetic but to noise pollution adding to a negative impact on our environment.

Stavros Skiadopoulos, president of the committee “Vrachionas” talked about ecological and environmental disaster, whilst mentioning that the advantage of having wind turbines on our island will not be of much benefit. He continued saying that slowly people should start to take charge and protect our beautiful island, especially in an area where it is already heavily under environmental problems due to waste management.

In George Armenis, president of the opposing political party of Zakynthos stated that not only is our council responsible for requesting a complete study in regards to the investment but our Region Unit is also just as responsible. The question on his lips, are practically the same as most of our residents…what just do the investors have in mind What do they have in the future, has there been an environmental study and what impact will they have on our environment in the near future.  Three wind turbines on our island Armenis states will certainly not be of benefit to our Island. Mr Armenis ended his statement by asking what are their plans are we to expect more than three wind turbines, our mayor should already have the studies in his hands and the Zakynthian people should be notified of what is going to happen.
