Zakynthos:- Zakynthos Airport, 90 arrested for illegal travel.

90 Cuban immigrants arrested at Zakynthos airport – They were travelling without a visa from Russia

A large operation was set up by the Hellenic Police (ELAS) at Zakynthos airport, where 90 self-proclaimed Cubans were located and arrested, travelling with incomplete travel documents originating from Russia.

According to police sources and the newspaper prothema.gr, the self-proclaimed Cubans had travelled from Russia to Serbia and from there to Athens. From Kifissos they took the KTEL and arrived in Zakynthos, probably the day before yesterday, and stayed in a hotel in the area of Laganas. Yesterday afternoon, a few people started coming by taxi to the island’s airport and, having checked in online, they went to the departure hall to board a Ryanair flight to Milan.

In Italy they intended to seek asylum. The Cubans were all well-dressed, there were families with small children and in fact there was a doctor among them. Airport officials were the ones who alerted the police when it was found during the check that the Cuban immigrants did not have visas with their passports. When the police arrived, a thorough check of their travel documents was launched to confirm that no Cubans had a visa with them.

Then, all the illegal travellers were blocked by the police in the departure hall and at dawn on Thursday they were transported by bus to a hotel in Zakynthos. According to information from protothema.gr, in addition to the 90 Cubans, another 120 of their compatriots are wanted, who were going to travel on the same flight, but never showed up at the airport. They may have been notified by those who arrived first and were noticed by the competent authorities.

Ryanair’s Skyserv Airport staff assisted the police work from the beginning.

According to police sources, during the Cubans’ stay at Zakynthos airport, there was an incident with the police as some tried to escape, as a result of which the Order Recovery Units (MAT) arrived within a few minutes.
