Underwater clean up campaign by Volunteers and Agean Rebreath organisation.

Aegan Rebreath, along with other volunteer groups are in here in Zakynthos for a two day clean up. The organization was founded with a primary goal to help Greek seas breath again. The team helps through collection, recycling and upcycling of marine litter. Its main object here in Zakynthos is to do underwater cleaning, research activities and a consultation with the locals. The project is supported by A.C Laskaridis Charitable Foundation.

Divers.

About 16 divers, including some of our own local divers are involved in the project of cleaning up the port area in Zakynthos town.  The team of divers will not only be cleaning the port of Zakynthos but today, Sunday 24th November will also be cleaning up the port of Saint Nicholas in the Volimes area.

Rubbish collected.

Rubbish collected included a lot of plastic, bottles and also tyres of all sizes.

In an interview by HMERA,  with Aggelos Sevastiadis a member of the local council, called for residents to be more aware of their environment. “The Volunteers will never see light of day if we keep throwing rubbish in our seas. It’s up to us to keep our environment clean.”

Volunteers have their say.

Antigoni Kouteri a member of Agean Breath explained that “Zakynthos is the last project for 2019. It was also the second project within the Ionian as we mainly clean up in the Agean”.

Airbags are used to help lift the objects found depending on the size of the object. Unfortunately a trailer with rocks was found.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t able to be removed as they did not have the necessary equipment needed to lift it. “A crane would be of great help in these situations” Antigoni said.

Giannis Pomonis manager of Dive Concepts along with Dimitris Kladis head of the “Clean Water of Zakynthos” movement, Euro Divers Zakynthos and Kostas Dive Centre all joined in the efforts.

Dimitris Kladis from the “Clean Waters of Zakynthos” movement explained “Vision is basically impossible here Zakynthos port area. The divers have to feel for objects by hand literally. Cleaning will continue today at the port of Saint Nicholas and later on in the afternoon we have a small event at the cultural centre so that we can discuss things about our environment and for the divers to exchange opinions.”

The divers were from all over Greece and a couple from Germany also took part. Volunteering in Zakynthos is finally getting praise and let’s hope that more groups in the future can spread the awarenes of keeping our environment clean.
