The Holy Church of Agia Mavra in Machairado celebrates with all ecclesiastical splendor on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 July 2022. A popular feast with live music and food will follow in the forecourt of the Church on Sunday evening.
Today, Saturday, July 9.
From the early afternoon, he will announce the events, the traditional “tambourloniakaro” in the courtyard of the church. At 20:00 the great high priestly vespers will be celebrated with bread baking. The holy pilgrimage to the icon of Agia Mavra will continue until midnight. Half an hour after midnight (Sunday morning) the liturgy will take place and then (around 2 am) the procession of the holy icon of Agia Mavra through the streets of the village according to local custom. The icon will return to the Temple at 03:00.
Tomorrow Sunday, July 10.
At 08:30 the official High Priestly Divine Liturgy will be celebrated. On Sunday evening after 20:00p.m there will be a folk feast with live music and food in the forecourt of the Church. The party lasts until the morning.
The Cultural Association of Machiradou “Agia Mavra” will also be located there, with the dance sections of the Association presenting dances from all over Greece, thus honoring the patron Saints of the village, Timotheo and Mavra.
Traditions.
“Characteristics of the festival of Agia Mavra in Machairado are the eftazimo, a sweett bread and stougado, a traditional Machairadian stew. You will also find the traditional Zakynthian sweets of pastelli and fitoures. During the night litany of the icon on Saturday, it is usual to see “bonfires” as Mr. Dionysis Flemotomos informs.
